Our simple guide to navigating government-funded residential aged care services in Australia

Starting the journey into residential aged care services can be overwhelming. Our guide breaks it down into easy steps to follow, from setting up your My Aged Care profile, to getting an assessment and applying to move into a home.

Common Residential Aged Care Frequently Asked Questions

We love questions! We’ve gathered some questions we get asked a lot. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please call one of our friendly team members for a chat on 1300 313 000.

What constitutes Residential Aged Care?

Everyone’s care needs are different and to determine your eligibility for residential aged care in WA you will need to have an in-person assessment with an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) through My Aged Care.

This assessment provides a Support Plan and a referral code for any services that are needed.

By providing information about your personal circumstances and preferences, our team can better understand how best we can support your individual care needs.

What is the difference between an aged care home, residential care, and a nursing home?

A residential aged care home, nursing home and residential care facility are the same thing, a place where older people receive 24/7 care and accommodation.

How much do I pay, and how much will be covered by the government?

Firstly, you’ll need to have an Assets and Income Assessment done through Services Australia (formerly Centrelink), which will help determine whether you are eligible to have part of your costs met in full or partly covered by the government.

There are a range of ways you can pay for your residential aged care accommodation at Juniper, simply give us a call for a friendly chat.

Why do I need to fill out the Services Australia (formerly Centrelink) form?

Completing your Income and Assets form through Services Australia is an important step in applying for residential aged care. It helps to determine what portion of costs and fees you may need to pay, and what the government may contribute.

If you decide not to complete the form, you will be responsible for paying the full costs of your residential aged care.

If you currently receive a means tested income support payment from Services Australia or DVA and you do not own your own home, you don’t need to fill out a form, but you will need to advise Services Australia that you are moving into an aged care home.

Do you provide shared accommodation for couples?

We do have some shared rooms for couples, but this is subject to availability. You can discuss your preferences with our Juniper team/Residential Manager at the home.

Do you have a waitlist if there are no vacancies at my preferred home?

Yes – once you have submitted your application and have been accepted by Juniper, if your preferred Home has no vacancies, we will place you on a waitlist and will notify you as soon as one comes available.

Is there availability in a Juniper aged care home/facility in Perth now?

Availability can change frequently. If your preferred home has no vacancies, we can place you on a waitlist. When selecting your preferred home, please note that we will consult with the residential care team to ensure the home can meet your clinical needs and provide the appropriate level of quality care for you.

Can I do a tour of your Residential Aged Care homes?

Yes! You can arrange a tour by calling your preferred Juniper Residential Aged Care Home, and the team will arrange for a time and day for you to come in and take a look around.

Can I bring my own furniture/belongings with me?

Yes! We want our residents to feel a sense of belonging and treat our homes like their own, which is why we welcome everyone bringing in their own belongings (such as ornaments and photo frames) so they can personalise their room. Furniture such as a comfy chair or a TV stand will be subject to the room space available and must also meet Juniper’s health and safety requirements. This can be discussed with the Residential Manager at the home.

What services/amenities are included during my stay at a Juniper home?
