Located close to the Esperance Health Care Campus, Juniper Esperance is a central part of this coastal town, enabling older people to stay close to their family, friends and community. Connections with local community groups benefit customers and make up an important part of the home.

With 104 single rooms, the home is just three blocks back from The Esplanade in a pleasant garden setting. A compassionate and respectful team of staff support residents to continue pursuing their own interests, backed by individualised clinical care.

Originally opened in the 1980s after two decades of fundraising, the former Recherche Rotary Hostel continued to expand, providing new beds and services. In 2026, it transitioned from being managed by a volunteer community board to Juniper, securing the future of quality aged care services for the region.

Meet the Residential Manager

Matthew Sheppard

Matt is dedicated to creating an environment that feels just like home. He believes quality age care should look at the whole person, caring for a person’s physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing. A former chef, he believes “food moments” play an important role in the wellbeing of customers, offering opportunities for choice and connection. Matt has spent the past seven years working in aged care and was approached to join the Esperance team three years ago to help support and strengthen the home during a period of change.

He is determined to build a positive workplace culture where staff feel supported, take pride in the care they provide and feel confident to build genuine relationships with customers and their families.

Matt is very conscious of the vital role Juniper Esperance plays in the local community as the only residential aged care home within a 400-kilometre radius. He believes Juniper Esperance’s 2026 renovations, including a new kitchen and refurbished resident wings, will make a genuine difference to the daily lives of customers, ensuring continuity of high-quality aged care services for the Esperance community.
