Did you know 72% of older Western Australians have experienced age discrimination? It’s a confronting statistic – and one that highlights the need for greater awareness, understanding, and action across our communities.
To help challenge age-based stereotypes and encourage meaningful conversations, Juniper is partnering with the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to host a free interactive workshop next month titled What’s age got to do with it?
Held across four Juniper locations on 4 and 5 June, the workshops are open to everyone interested in learning more about the impacts of age discrimination and how we can all help create a more inclusive society.
The workshops build on insights from Juniper’s 2025 White Paper, The Voice of Older Western Australians, which revealed nearly three in four older Western Australians have experienced age-based discrimination.
These engaging sessions are designed to challenge common assumptions about ageing, explore the real-world impacts of ageism, and provide practical strategies participants can apply in everyday life.
During the workshops, facilitated by the AHRC, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Explore common beliefs and stereotypes about age
- Learn how age discrimination can impact wellbeing, confidence, and opportunity
- Gain practical ideas to support more inclusive thinking and behaviour
- Take part in meaningful conversations that encourage positive change
Juniper CEO Russell Bricknell said discrimination can affect anyone, and creating more inclusive communities starts with awareness and conversation.
“Age discrimination is one of the most common, and often overlooked, forms of discrimination in our community,” Mr Bricknell said. “At Juniper, we believe every person deserves to feel valued, respected, and included at every stage of life.
“These workshops are an important opportunity to challenge outdated assumptions about ageing, listen to the experiences of older Western Australians, and explore how we can all contribute to more inclusive and age-friendly communities.”
