Memories of fishing trips with his wife Rae in Albany were reignited this month for Sarah Hardey resident Bruce Beattie, who along with his fellow residents was able to wet a line again with a fishing trip to Coogee Marina jetty.
Led by Personal Care and Activities Assistant Nancy Soriano, a group of Juniper Sarah Hardey residents recently took a break from their daily routines to join a bus outing to the Marina.
The idea for the outing was sparked by Bruce, who mentioned that he and his wife used to fish together in Albany but felt his mobility made that impossible now. Nancy took note and made sure it was something he could experience again.
The Juniper team worked together to find an accessible location and organise all the equipment needed, so that as many residents as possible could take part on the day.
“It’s not enough to give our residents something to do with their hands, you must reach for the heart as well as the hands,” Nancy said.
“This fishing trip provided our residents a highly positive, relaxing, and social experience. It allowed them to connect with nature, reminisce about their past experiences, and share joy even when the fish were not biting.”
They were blessed with beautiful weather, and residents enjoyed the fresh air and shared stories about their childhood fishing trips with fathers and grandfathers while watching their lines.
For some residents it was a familiar feeling they hadn’t experienced in years, and for others it was something completely new.
