New-look Annesley celebrates

Residents, families and staff have come together to celebrate the completion of a major refurbishment of Juniper Annesley Residential Aged Care Home in Bentley designed to improve comfort, safety, functionality and resident experience.

The refurbishment was carried out while the home remained operational and wouldn’t have been possible without the co-operation, patience and understanding of the wonderful residents, their families and the efforts of staff.

“Thank you for being so patient and wonderful during the process. And thank you to our staff who have had to work around as the refurbishments were carried out,” Juniper CEO Russell Bricknell said at the event.

The refurbishments were celebrated over a delicious spread at the new look café area put on by the Juniper hospitality team.

The refurbishment is part of Juniper’s commitment to high-quality, contemporary environments that support dignity, connection and quality of life for older Western Australians.

The $6.7 million project, informed by dementia-enabling design principles, was funded by Juniper and coordinated over two stages, including the refurbishment of a wing at Annesley for the Transition Care Program offering 16 beds to customers who will benefit from 24/7 care during recovery following a hospital stay, injury or illness. The first stage was completed in October 2024.

Stage 2 of the major project included refurbishment of shared living, dining and activity spaces; upgrades to serveries and kitchen support areas to make the dining areas quieter; renewal of corridors and improved finishes, lighting, wayfinding and accessibility throughout common areas; and refurbishment of the main entry, lobby and café.

Some of the finishing touches, including artwork and signage, are still to be carried out.

Feedback from residents and families throughout the project has been positive, particular for the improved shared spaces and courtyards.

Annesley resident Heinrich Borojevic said the changes were “fantastic”.

“This is the people’s palace. It makes you feel happy and safe,” he said.

“There’s now areas of different sizes to use, included more secluded places where you can talk with family or friends whenever you want to.”
