Lou: A Champion of Aged Care Compassion

Lou McCann is the quintessential Jill-of-all-trades at Juniper Annesley Residential Aged Care Home.

Now an experienced veteran in her 14^th year with Juniper, Lou wears a variety of hats – from Multiskilled Carer, Administration Officer and mentor to new colleagues.

Being part of the furniture at Annesley is a far cry from her earlier years. Lou worked as a logistics manager in the Philippines, where she was born and bred, before migrating to Perth with her husband in 2011.

When she got to Perth, she was encouraged to study aged care and the rest, as they say, is history. As working in aged care was worlds apart from her previous career, she didn’t think she could do the job at first but soon found her feet in an industry she loves.

“When I first started, the vibes were good,” she said.

“I applied on a Wednesday and I started work on the Friday.”

Lou’s impact is deeply appreciated and respected according to Annesley Residential Manager, Asha Kayaga.

“Lou’s leadership and steady presence have been instrumental in maintaining high standards of care,” she said.

“Her commitment to excellence and her calm, supportive approach has positively shaped the team culture.”

Lou says it’s the people – colleagues and customers alike – which is why she has called Annesley home for so long.

“I have a good rapport with residents and colleagues. I can talk with them openly,” she said.

“I am certain I will still be here in five years’ time.”

After spending the bulk of her time at Juniper as a multiskilled carer, Lou now enjoys variety in her work week as she fills-in on reception as an Administration Officer and mentors’ new colleagues.

The self-professed people’s person, mentors’ new colleagues through a variety of ways such as supporting them and welcoming them from the outset. She says establishing good relationships with customers is one of the best aspects of her job.

“I’ve been able to build some good relationships with customers who have been with us for a while.”
