Graham Hill is the quintessential country Western Australian bloke, who loves nothing more than spending time with his family, have a yarn and enjoying a cold beer – though not necessarily in that order.
Born in York, the self-confessed ‘dag’ has called everywhere from Mandurah to Central Queensland home, including Wheatbelt towns.
“I’ve done everything from shearing to male modelling,” he laughs. “Most of my life has been in the bush and I love it.”
That connection to the bush, and to the love of his life, wife Betty who he met whilst shearing in Central Queensland, has been maintained as he enjoys life now in his mid-80’s at Juniper Korumup Residential Aged Care.
Graham and Betty moved to Juniper Korumup last year.
“The staff and meals are excellent,” he said.
“Korumup is like a big country house. Everyone is beautiful. It’s got a real community feel.”
That sense of community, and residents like Graham, bring joy and meaningful connections for the staff at Korumup. Staff say Graham is the resident character — always ready with a cheeky joke — and a devoted husband and father.
“Betty is my everything. The mother of kids, grandmother of my grandkids – she’s a battler.”
Graham’s early years weren’t easy. After losing his mother young, he spent time in an orphanage, before living with his father.
He admits to being mischievous when he was younger – a trait some say hasn’t gone far away in adulthood.
“We used to go out and pinch produce like watermelons off nearby properties,” he laughed.
