Juniper resident receives Order of Australia honour

Congratulations to Juniper Gerdewoonem resident Ambrose Mungala Chalarimeri on receiving an Order of Australia medal for his services to Indigenous heritage.

A Kwini man from the Kimberley, Mr Chalarimeri OAM was recognised for his academic achievements in researching traditional rock art in the North East Kimberley.

The 87-year-old recently travelled from Juniper Gerdewoonem in Kununurra to Perth to accept the prestigious honour from WA Governor Chris Dawson. Mr Chalarimeri’s partner Traudl Tan (pictured above) also attended the awards reception.

In 2009, Mr Chalarimeri released his autobiography “The Man from The Sunrise Side”, which recounts his time growing up on a mission as a young boy and later years of mustering on cattle stations, bush mechanics and horticulture. The book provides an insightful look into the lives, culture and customs of the First Nations people.

For the past three years, Mr Chalarimeri has lived at Juniper Gerdewoonem and enjoys painting, socialising with fellow residents and loves listening to music.

The annual Order of Australia awards celebrate Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement. Mr Chalarimeri and fellow WA recipients for 2025 were announced in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
