Holiday in Albany an enticing move for Warren

It was a holiday to Albany that enticed Warren to relocate to WA’s Great Southern coastline.

“I’m in love with Albany – we have a house here now, and we have a baby. Just driving around Albany, it’s beautiful. There’s a lot to discover.”

Warren’s journey with Juniper began five years ago when he took a role as a multiskilled carer at Juniper’s residential aged care home in Derby.

“When I started the job in Derby, I had no qualifications but they assisted me in joining TAFE so I could get my Certificate IV in Individual Support in the first year,” he said.

“Working with people from different countries and different cultural backgrounds, they all share the same respect for our elders.

“Being there five days a week, you start to build that connection with residents as well, and they start to treat you like one of your own.”

When the opportunity arose to relocate to Albany to work at Juniper Korumup Residential Aged Care Home, Warren and his wife – who works as a head chef at Juniper – jumped at the chance.

“Transferring to Albany from Derby was very smooth and we had the full support from our manager,” he said.

Warren’s love for working in aged care has opened his eyes to further career opportunities.

“I have started a course to do my nursing and I want to stay in aged care,” he said.

“I didn’t know anything about nursing, so being a carer that really opened my eyes to how important nurses are. I’m very interested in the field itself, I thought ‘why not’, I think I can do it.”

“Working with older nurses in the home, I’ve learnt a lot from them. So that’s a big positive for me.”
