Hayloft residents enjoy a day of fruit picking

Juniper Hayloft residents headed to Mr Peters Orchid Farm in Armadale earlier this month for a morning of fruit picking, returning home with baskets of fresh, in-season produce and lots of happy memories.

“The residents love getting out and about to experience something new or something they haven’t been able to do for a long time,” said Residential Manager Tash Kiernan. “An outing like this allows them to connect with nature and meet different people in the community.”

Personal Care and Activities Assistant Nancy Soriano said the impact on residents was visible from the moment they arrived. “Apart from the facial expressions of happiness and excitement, it boosted their emotional wellbeing and sense of purpose,” she said. “They felt calm, relaxed and proud while picking their own fruit.”

Nancy said there’s something about hands-on activity that is very engaging for older people.

“The fruit picking was a fantastic trip down memory lane as they were able to reminisce, plus it was a great opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the tangible reward of fresh, homegrown produce.”

Nancy and Tash work closely together each month to find different venues that are safe, secure and accessible, bringing in additional staff including Occupational Therapy Assistant Lilia to make sure every resident is well supported throughout the day.

“It requires keen and constant planning,” Nancy said, “but it is absolutely worth it.”
