Celebrating our nurses this International Nurses Day

Each year on 12 May, International Nurses Day recognises the contributions of nurses around the world, and Juniper has much to celebrate when it comes to its own nursing workforce.

This year’s theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” puts the spotlight on what happens when nurses are properly supported, safer care, stronger health systems, and better outcomes for the communities they serve. It’s a message that resonates a lot in aged care, where nurses play a vital role in the lives of older Western Australians every single day.

To mark the occasion this year, we asked nurses from across our residential homes and home care teams to take a selfie of their favourite moment of the week. Together, they paint a picture of what makes our nurses happy, motivated, and proud to do what they do.

Sheridan Lockyer - Enrolled Nurse, Community Care, Northam

For Enrolled Nurse Sheridan Lockyer, the highlight of the week came on four legs.

“In community care, animals are a huge part of my customers’ lives,” says Sheridan, an Enrolled Nurse based in Northam. “We come to know and love our customers’ pets as much as we love our own.”

The photo is of Ruby, her customers’ dog, caught mid-cuddle on Sheridan’s way out one morning. “Ruby gets so excited when she knows I’ve arrived. I think she assumes I’m there just to visit her!”

To Sheridan, Ruby is much more than a friendly greeting at the door “Animals offer a sense of security, a calmness, an unwavering loyalty, and a love that requires no words.”

Ruby and her owners are, she says, the highlight of her week every week.

Cass Bismonte - Clinical Nurse Manager, Juniper Hilltop

For Clinical Nurse Manager Cass Bismonte, the best part of the week was a team huddle at Juniper Hilltop. “I love connecting with our care staff during huddles,” she says. “Getting together as a team, even just for a few minutes, is one of my favourite parts of the role.”

Pictured front and centre with her registered nurses and care staff, Cass is a firm believer in keeping her team motivated and connected.

Domini Tukapua - Registered Nurse, Community Care, Bentley

During a nursing assessment in Bentley, Registered Nurse Domini Tukapua met Angelka, a Home Care customer originally from Croatia, who speaks Croatian as her first language.

“She was an absolute delight to engage with,” says Domini.

At some point during the visit, Angelka brought out a small mouse crafted from tissue paper. She calls it “Misha.” Angelka has been making them since childhood, and they carry happy memories from her early years in Croatia. She was happy to share the story behind it and show Domini her handiwork.

“Her creativity and warmth were evident as she shared her story,” says Domini. “Her gesture truly brightened my day, knowing how significant these handmade treasures are to her.”

Alphy Chacko - Registered Nurse, Juniper Hilltop, Bentley

For Registered Nurse Alphy, every shift at Juniper Hilltop is one she looks forward to. “Nursing is such a rewarding profession,” she says. “I love coming into Hilltop each day knowing I can make a meaningful difference in residents’ lives.”

Pictured with her dressing trolley, Alphy chose a wound care moment as her highlight. “Wound care is one of my favourite parts of the role and something I find really fulfilling.”

The Nurses of Juniper Karinya

The nurses of Juniper Karinya’s highlight of the week is Patches, the residential home’s much-loved therapy cat. Patches is just as popular with the nursing team as he is with the residents, and their favourite moment of the week was spending a little time giving him the cuddles, attention, and treats he so rightfully deserves.
