Bringing care to customers brings Bernadette joy

A long-held passion for helping others prompted Bernadette Woolf to study aged care, and once she moved into her Multiskilled Carer role with Juniper, she knew it was a great decision.

Part of a team, the 51-year-old works between multiple floors at the bustling Juniper Hayloft site in Martin, providing personal care to customers.

“I love all my residents, and I’ve got good people to work with – we always help each other out,” she said.

Prior to her career in aged care, Bernadette had an extremely busy time of it raising four children.

Looking for a different role once her kids were fully grown, the then mum in her mid-30s decided to study a Certificate III & IV in Aged Care at Perth TAFE.

“I enjoy making people happy, and I’d say to others thinking about the studies that if they have a lot of passion to support, understand and respect others, just go for it,” she said.

Once she started working in aged care, Bernadette soon realised it was her “calling” and has supported others as a carer for the past 16 years.

In addition to her daily duties, the highly experienced carer enjoys helping university students taking part in practical placements to develop their skills in supporting customers when it comes to tasks like hoist lifts and personal care needs.

Along with the opportunity to connect with customers, Bernadette also appreciates the flexible nature of her role so she can enjoy two of her favourite past times – gardening and gym workouts.

“One of the residents likes picking flowers and she gave me a flower this morning – it’s those little things why I love my job, and make it all worthwhile,” she said.

Happy to continue as a carer into the future, Bernadette said she enjoys the workplace so much that she might even become a customer at Juniper Hayloft herself when she retires from the workforce.

“I enjoy making people happy, and I’d say to others thinking about the studies that if they have a lot of passion to support, understand and respect others, just go for it.”
